The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has convened member states to harmonise refugee interventions in the region. The meeting brought together leaders and experts to address the growing humanitarian challenges facing millions of displaced people.
A Regional Approach
East Africa hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world. Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Sudan continue to carry a heavy burden as conflict and climate crises force families from their homes.
IGAD officials stressed the need for joint strategies on funding, legal frameworks, and integration policies. By harmonising approaches, countries aim to reduce duplication and ensure refugees receive consistent support.
Uganda’s Commitment
Uganda, which currently hosts more than 1.5 million refugees, reaffirmed its open-door policy. Officials said the government will continue to support displaced people while calling for more international assistance.
Durable Solutions
The discussions also focused on long-term solutions such as education, skills development, and job opportunities for refugees. Leaders agreed that empowering displaced populations would reduce dependency on aid and foster regional stability.
Looking Ahead
At the close of the meeting, IGAD member states pledged to create a joint framework for refugee interventions. This is expected to improve coordination with international partners and enhance the dignity and resilience of displaced communities.
